Just because the spouse is asking the question doesn't make them controlling.

Actually, I was basing this more on their response to belfastgirl...

If she is after something that isn't too expensive and wants something natural she should check out the Dr Organic range in Holland and Barratt - they aren't that expensive in the first place, they often have special offers in the shop - buy one item get another for a penny or buy one get one half price, that sort of thing and they don't use petrochemicals and other such nasties in their products.

I haven't used their face creams as I mainly use more expensive ranges, but the body products I've used have been very nice and good value compared to other natural brands.

I'd also agree with the Amie products recommendation. I haven't used them for awhile as I moved onto a different brand (and now just use the BB cream as above) but they were lovely with good ingredients. They have a trial pack on their website of travel sizes of both moisturisers for a quid - not sure what postage is though. Otherwise you can get the full size for under £5 in Waitrose or online.

Good spot :) The trial pack is two 10ml tubes, which doesn't sound like a lot, but I'm using the matte moisturiser at the moment and 10ml has lasted a surprisingly long time. It's quite a 'wet' cream so not much is needed.

If you ever shop in Lidl, invest £3 or so in a tube of their own-brand face cream. I prefer cream in a tube, it's much more hygienic than dipping your fingers into a pot each time.

I've tried lots of mid-range face creams, (Olay, L'Oreal etc) but they all make my face itch. The Lidl one doesn't and as well as being cheap and lasting for ages, it's lovely on the skin, it sinks in quickly and doesn't leave a shine.

And if she doesn't like it on her face, she/you can use it as hand cream, at that price, it's still cheaper than a lot of handcreams!
I'll let you know what she thinks (after her chores are completed, of course)

Personally I love Olay regenerist products which work well for me and play nicely with makeup. However I also use Cerave, which is a lovely cheap cream which contains nicotinamides ( protects against free radicals which age skin) and they do a lovely day version with SPF or night version without. Both last about 3-4 months if used every day.

Superdrug do a fabulous cheap (£2.69 but frequent buy one get one half price offers) serum

which is raved about by beauty guru Sali Hughes ( she does great short articles on beauty items in the guardian every Saturday ) and also the Boots botanics range is cheap and highly recommended on beauty forums.

I know people who rave about the aldi crea,s, particularly the cavear range, but the Lacura brand made both my daughter and I come out in red patches and made our skins very dry. Skin care is a very personal thing.
