Dubrovnik, Croatia - Any Info?

My spouse & I are off to Dubrovnik next month and wondered if anyone had any information or tips to share about the city and any surrounding areas that are worth a visit?
Also if anyone knows whether the airport has an ATM from which I could withdraw Croatian Kunas upon arrival rather than changing them up this end I would be very pleased to hear from you. Thanks.

if you have a spare couple of hours , a boat trip over to Lokrum island is worthwhile.......... take a decent pair of shoes and a bottle of water with you though as the track up to the monastery can be quite challenging at places ! oh and beware of the nudists
It really is a nice contrast to the hustle of dubrovnik , and it's a nice place to get some different photo's of the city walls
The excelsior hotel has a fantastic terrace restaurant , again with views of the city walls(lovely at night)"The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page."
happy travels !!

I was there a couple of weeks ago - The Airports just being upgraded / rebuilt and didn't see an ATM at arrivals. The Bus into Town will accept Euros, and there are plenty of ATM's in the Town. I've been to Dubrovnik a few time in the past 10 years, and it's now become one of Europes "must see" destinations. You must do the walk around the City walls (over a mile and some climbing) and a trip to Cavtat from the Harbour is worthwhile. Any more info - please feel free to PM me.0

Thanks both of you for your tips. I have picked up a guidebook today - but real life experience cannot be beaten!
I will definitely try to get over to Lokrum, we did consider staying at the Excelsior but decided it was a bit beyond our budget because we are hoping to go to Germany later in the year (a tour up or down the Rhine - but by car rather than boat so that we can stop where we want to) so didn't want to overdo it for Croatia - although perhaps we will get to the hotel for a meal on their terrace.
Thanks for the Airport info, I think I might get enough Kunas to last me a couple of days before I go for convenience. Thanks for the offer to PM you with further questions Mystic_Trev, I will read my guidebook and come back to you nearer the time if that is OK?
Thanks again!:EasterBun

Well here we are in Croatia, I am logged in and checking email & MSE in an outdoors internet park in Lapad, Dubrovnik - very progressive country, I thought they were going to be years behind us technology & infrastructure-wise. How wrong can you be?!!:EasterBun

If you get a chance to do a day trip to Montenegro, go for it, absolutely stunning scenery!0

Thanks PEAT. Back last night, we didn't get to go to Montenegro but we did go to Mostar in Bosnia Herzegovina - which was fascinating and so much different from what we were expecting! Had a great week, if a little too hot (heatwave).:EasterBun

Sounds like you had a good time - Hope you didn't get tempted to jump off the "Old bridge" in Mostar!
I backpaced around southern Croatia and BiH end of April / beginng of May. It was my sixth trip to Croatia in the past ten years, so I've got to know the place pretty well...and yes I was even going there during the conflict, when there were very few Tourists around - Now it's become one of the must see destinations, but unfortunately prices have more than trebled since I was first there!
You must try Montenegro for your next visit - go to Virtualtourist.com and try "destination" Kotor and maybe you see what I mean? Montenegro - Croatia without all the tourists!0 -
Montenegro sounds great, but in a week we had to be pretty selective in order to balance sightseeing with a much needed break!
Where else in Croatia would you recommend?:EasterBun

BNU Split is a great place to spend a few days, then head out to one (or more) of the Islands on the Ferries, that leave from Split. I really like Hvar, but if you want to avoid Tourists (in the Peak season) go to Vis and hire a bike! The good thing about Virtualtourist is that you can look at any destination, and see what other people think of and recommed.0
