Wrong address - credit risk?

Hello.
I received a letter today addressed to a person unknown to me. A few days ago the same thing happened and I gave it back to the postman. This time, I opened it as the return address relates to "Premium Credit Ltd". Inside, I found a letter referring to unpaid direct debits etc payable to "Herts Insurance Consultants". No one in my family has ever dealt with either of these bodies. I am afraid to contact them in case our family name gets somehow mixed up with the debt. However, I am also concerned that the debt may somehow become attached to our family because of the address.
Suggestions would be appreciated before this turns into one of those mistaken identity horror stories one hears about in the press.
Thank you.

Debt belongs to individuals, not addresses.
Either ignore it or scribble not known at this address and return. I'd ignore it.0 -
As above - addresses are no longer 'blacklisted' - only people.0

Hi Epimetheus,
The other posters on here are right - don't panic. Debt is no longer linked to addresses so this debt should not affect you in anyway. You cannot 'create' liability simply by interacting with a company like this, the only person/people who are liable is the one(s) who signed the contract. If you get anymore post for someone you don't know then simply draw a line through the envelope and write "Not known at this address, Return to sender". Hopefully, the creditor will then start searching elsewhere.
If the letters still persist then you could actually complain about being harassed for a debt that is not yours. (Just be careful about opening another persons post without their permission - only use the details on the envelope). But I would say - don't panic,
Laura

They can't get your family name mixed with the debt as it isn't your debt.0
