Phone case plastic insert?

I recently bought a wallet-style case for my iPhone 5s on eBay. It was listed as 'new' and looked new when I received it, but I suspect it was someone's old stock as the plastic insert that actually holds the phone has gone very brittle and it starting to break up. I really like the rest of the case (genuine leather with a cloth lining) and I don't want to bin it and start again. Is there anywhere I can buy the plastic bit that holds the phone? It's thin black plastic the same shape as the phone, with edges that cover the phone sides and clip over the corners. If I can get one I am sure I can remove the old one and fix a new one in. I have never seen anything like this for sale and don't know where to look.

Thanks for any help.

  • Hi,

If so just google iphone bumper, or try ebay or Amazon.

Not quite. I already have a silicon bumper but it is too soft and pliable. The thing I am looking for is thin rigid plastic which clips round the phone to hold it in place. This appears to be glued onto the material of the wallet, similar to this one (the shiny bit round the sides of the phone):

I have never seen them sold separately, but I assume they are available to supply the makers of phone cases.

    Thanks anyway.

  • Hi,

ok, see what you mean now.

Could you maybe get a thin clip on back cover and attach it to your wallet with a couple of strips of stick on velcro?

Thanks for that. Yes, that may be the solution.

Velcro would make it too bulky, I think, but I have some good glues available.

Or you could buy a cheap case via fleabay, remove the relevant bit and fasten it to your case

Phone cases are pretty cheap on eBay. The original was obviously defective and I seriously doubt there is any easy way to bodge it up effectively. Best bet imo is to get a new case and decide whether to gamble on another eBay cheapy or spend more and get one from somewhere it can easily be returned.

If the original was bought recently enough it may still be easy to raise an eBay dispute. If that option isn't available trying to enforce SOG rights isn't going to be worth the effort imo.

I suspect the one I bought was unused old stock. And plastic does go brittle with time. When I first posted here, it had started to crack. Now chunks of it are falling off and it is not secure any more. I don't regard it as repairable. I won't raise an ebay dispute because the damage could easily be caused by being dropped, so it's an argument I would be unlikely to win, and for £12 it's not worth the hassle.

I think getting a cheap but sturdy replacement and cannibalising the holder part is the best solution. Thanks for all the suggestions.
