Insurance - occupation not listed

Since I retired my main occupation is a District Councillor for which I receive an allowance.
Therefore I would assume I will be classified as "employed"
I could say I am a househusband but if I make a claim on my car insurance for an accident whilst commuting to/from Basingstoke Council I might find the insurer will say I did not inform them that I was employed and may refuse my claim.
Yet every time I try to get a quote they say there isnt an occupation that matches either District or Borough Councillor.
As I am elected I will not be classified as a Civil Servant or Council Worker.because Councillors receive a code of conduct and have to swear an oath but we do not have employment contracts.
Any ideas welcome

I think you need to talk to an actual insurer or broker.
I think you come into the category of an "office holder". I am in a similar position as a company director. When I retired from regular work I asked my insurers what occupation category I should declare, and they said company director remained the correct description.
As in your case, I needed to keep the cover for driving into "work", which the insurer said would be lost if I declared as "retired".
I should talk to them - they must have a category that covers your situation. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
