Transplanting Wild Garlic

When is the best time to transplant wild garlic bulbs/plants? I use lots of it every year - salads and pesto.

It's for planting an old hen pen which is a mix of soil / hen manure/ gravel and is a mass of weeds which I mow occasionally.

There's a greenhouse in the middle of the pen and I'd like to have it surrounded by wild garlic :)

I realise it can take over.

Does anyone know how / when to transplant it?

Well, it's flowering now, so not the best time, but it's extremely hard to kill, so any other time that you fancy, I'd say, though autumn might be best.

Just dig a hole and stick it in. That's all I did, but I gave it a damp, shady site in acknowledgement of its preferences.

Have a look at the Plants For Shade website - I got my wild garlic from there, think I planted it out in August/September

Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?

Wild garlic grows in the forest ?
It does where I live. Not exactly forest, but deciduous woodland.

Mind you, I transplanted mine from the garden, where someone else had planted it in full sun at least 5 years previously.
  • It does indeed tend to take over. I planted some at one point - and, when I returned to the spot the following year - it was wild garlic everywhere...ahem...

It obviously really liked that area - which was somewhat shaded and damp.

I have tried recently to plant some in 2 other spots that I would have thought had very similar conditions - ie somewhat shaded and damp. However - this time - not a single peep. Maybe it doesnt like clay soil? (as that's what is in this area - but it was rather different soil in my last area).
