Smart Meter - What's The Point?
I am currently with EDF.
Year ago they replaced both my meters (gas and electric) for smart ones. Then I thought there would be no need to update them anymore as they can read my usage every day (gave them consent to do this).
But it seems they do not use this as I would have hoped.
They last billed me last November and increased DD since then.
Then my account balance is only going up as they do not produce bills often enough. But even if they want to bill me only twice a year then they could still reconcile my account more often so it doesn't look like I have £700 balance there? They increase my account balance every month when they take money from my bank but they NEVER offset this amount against my usage.
Pita really.
So, today I have manually submitted readings from my "smart meters" to reduce my balance by few hundred pounds to £60ish and got the message in a few secs that my DD will be decreased.
What's the point then of having smart meters when they do not use its main feature? It was "sold" to me on the basis that they can assess my usage and bill me more precisely than with old style meters. Yeah, sure...

Are you registered to operate your account in line and did you request paperless billing ? If so all your account and meter readings will be there.
Your DD will move about as EDF try to guess the weather and your actual consumption history.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
Sure, I operate my account wholly on-line and receive bills as pdf.
But nothing really has changed in the way they operate account since changing meters.0 -
According to the website, if you have given consent for meter readings to be sent half-hourly or daily, then your account balance online should update roughly every 48 hours. I would call their Smart metering team tomorrow on 0800 015 787.

Just because they can get meter readings every day does not mean they recalculate our DD every day. Most suppliers only review the DD a couple of times a year because people want payments to remain consistent.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.
