Invalid PCN number

So I received a PCN from Vehicle Control Services in the private car park where we live.
When I went to pay it it tell me that the PCN number is invalid. This was a week or so after the ticket was issued.
Has anyone else experienced this? Might my PCN have been "lost" at their end?
Thanks!

It is a scam. If you would rather not pay it we can help. Read the stickies. You never know how far you can go until you go too far.0

Thanks, I've read through them, I'm a little confused though, should I be appealing now? Or waiting to see if they've even registered the ticket properly?0

The answer to that is in the stickies. If this is an "own space" ticket why are you even contemplating paying the scammers? You never know how far you can go until you go too far.0

It's a shared private car park with no marked bays and so no specific "own space". We have permits, I was displaying the wrong one so technically my fault. I don't want to pay.
I'm wondering if the PCN number is invalid how can they track any PCN back to me, and therefore by sending a letter of appeal would I not be admitting knowledge or liability?
I've read the stickies a couple of times. I found the appeal template letter but I couldn't see anything that really described my situation. Sorry0
