And use a decent sized brush. Undercoating and glossing skirtings and architraves up to walls is a lot easier with say a 2" brush than a 1/2" one. It sounds counterintuitive to do accurate work with a bigger brush but the bigger brush gives you much more control.

Yup, using a 2" brush for cutting in, quite a good size bar the narrow gaps between door frames/wall, where I use the edge of the 2" brush, but tidy up with a 1" brush afterwards.
I have found Poundland's masking tape very useful as its not very strong and works great with the jobs like this.
Have done 2 rooms using that tape and left for over a day and still it was removed with no mess.
Maybe your one was a strong one.

I doubt our tape was particularly strong, we'd had it hanging around for a year or two and from memory, it might have come from the £ shop...
  • Definitely wouldn't bother masking up woodwork if it has a paint finish. Cut in by hand with a wide brush, wipe off any emulsion if you get it on the wood with a damp cloth, then undercoat and paint the woodwork.
