OK just typed in https://www.google.com on my UK site and it just defaulted back to google uk automatically. Then turned on tunnelbear and connected to us. Google UK screen appeared and I typed google.com into the toolbar. This produced an error message, "This site can't be reached. https://www.google.co.uk refused to connect." Meanwhile tunnelbear sent a message on bottom of screen saying tunnelbear is still connected tunnelling for you. Err_Connection Refused"

So it appears impossible to get away from https://www.google.co.uk?

Well I cleared out cache etc and then tried again. Still would not connect but this time I had another message saying "Unusual traffic detected from your network" along with a description saying that this normally meant automated traffic of some sort "sending searches from a robot, computer program, auto service or scraper". I was then asked to fill in a captcha to continue. Which I did.

Then got message saying I was blocked from using google. And that "the blocking might related to your use of a vpn. You might try uninstalling it. If you are the ISP explain to users that they should uninstall VPNs that send traffic that violates their terms of use or the law."

At this stage I rebooted and installed firefox.

So what was the mystery browser you were using before Firefox? Did FF cure it?
