Insurance Sky Rocketed
Hi, I am 19 years old and will have had my licence for 2 years next month when my insurance renews.
I had been getting quotes of around £600 - £800 for my renewal which I was happy with, but unfortunately yesterday evening I was involved in an accident. I was at fault, there were no injuries and I notified my insurance straight away, and I also lost my 2 years no claims. This evening I have been getting quotes for my renewal and they have jumped from under £800 to over £2500!! (I only paid £1700 for my first year).
I expected them to go up after the accident, but not this much! Does anyone have any advice on how I can get a reduced premium? I'm really not keen on black box insurance as I had one for my first year and it was hell, although I might have to settle for a box. But if anyone has any advice on how I could get it cheaper it would be greatly appreciated!!

Not having a fault accident within two years of passing your test is a good idea.
Other than a Black Box there is nothing you can do to reduce your premiums.
Your title is a little disingenuous.0 -
Put an older woman on as a second driver, that will bring it down a little bit.0

What car are you driving? Maybe think of getting one in a lower insurance group.0

The joys of youth... 19 year old at work passed his test 4 weeks ago now. Bought a 2003 1.4 Astra and paid £3200 for insurance. Thinks he's invincible, drives down the hill to work the other day,way too fast, hits the speed bump at the bottom of the hill and takes out his whole exhaust system!
Get's that replaced and then last night decides it's a good idea to do wheel spins in the works car park.
I wonder why insurance is so expensive.....!'Just because its on the internet don't believe it 100%'. Abraham Lincoln.
I have opinions, you have opinions. All of our opinions are valid whether they are based on fact or feeling. Respect other peoples opinions, stop forcing your opinions on other people and the world will be a happier place.0 -

Maybe an M3?0 -
Look at it from the insurer's point of view.
Two years ago, you had a nice shiny newly-minted licence. You knew that you were fresh on the road. Everybody accepted that you were a fairly high risk. Still, put a black box in the car, and the insurer can track whether you've got your head screwed on right or not.
Now picture a choice of two 19yos.
One has two years NCB, no points, a clean history. They're obviously learning how to play nicely with other traffic.
The other is in the middle of an at-fault claim... and refuses to have a black box in the car...
Now, which would YOU rather cover? Yeh, me too.
The fact that you think a black box is "hell" says quite a bit about your attitude, tbh, and is exactly why insurers reduce premiums for those who have them.0 -

This. I put my Mum and my Sister on in my first year of driving and it brought it down massively.Total Debt - £17,850.57
Long road to being debt free!0 -
Buy a lower grouped car, add a parent, increase your excess....may lower it a bit.
If you manage to get through the next year claim free your premium should come down by 30% next year.0 -
I would agree with adding a named driver, such as a parent.
However, at your age, a lower insurance group has NO bearing on your premium. Insurance is calculated on risk databases - prices can vary wildly across some surprising cars. I have two daughters, we bought one a 2.0 VW Beetle and when she passed her test at 17, her first year insurance, in her own name & fully comp., was £800 - no black box.
My other daughter has had 'black box' insurance for two out of the last three years - I can't see what the problem with it is unless you drive like a lunatic, she's never had premiums added, or been charged for excess mileage (She did 30,000 miles in one year with a Tesco black box, over twice her stated mileage - Tesco didn't contact her, or make any further charges).0
