Confused

Options
I am a student at Bath Spa Uni. I started my course in 2004 and was due to finish this year, but I decided to go part time for the third year because I wanted to work more. I started the 3rd year as a full time student, receiving notification from devon LEA that I would have to pay full fees of £1200. In the previous years the uni had taken my fees straight away bu this year it was kinda strange because for some unknown reason they did not take the fees immediately. My card had expired by the time they wanted to take the fees so I made 3 payments of £300 in Jan Feb and Mar. I did wonder why they didnt take a forth payment but assumed that they had taken in in Sept. Looking back att my acc I realised that this didnt happen. I decided to go part time half way through the first semester, because it made sense to take pressure off by speading the 3rd year over 1.5 years. At the time, I called finance to ask if I would have to make any payment for the last part of the course as I thought I had paid £1200 to cover 6 modules. Recently I did the online registering for this semester and at the end it said I owed £1175 (!?) I then emailed uni finance who said that

Thank you for your e-mail. I'm afraid your understanding of the payments you have made isn't correct.

In 2004/05 you / SLC paid the full-time, 6 module fee, of £1,150.

In 2005/06 you / SLC paid the full-time, 6 module fee, of £1,175. I understand that you need to re-take one of these modules.

In 2006/07 you paid the 4* module fee of £900.

You now have 3 modules left to take and pay for in 2007/08. The fee for either 2 or 3 modules is £765.

*I did a retake but was not told that I would have to pay for this. When I asked the person in finance about this this morn she said I have to pay more as a part time student due to admin and extra tuition. (I argued the extra tuition to which she admitted she had made a mistake and that it was just for admin. That works out to £400 admin for 3 modules over four months because I realise that I owe £300 from the original argreement last year.

So by spreading out the course they are saying that total fees for my third year come to about £1600. However, the 3 modules I am doing this semester will cost (in their opinion) £765, whether I do them over one semester or two. So why wouldnt their be extra "admin" fees. I would never have gone part time if I knew I had to pay all this extra money and specifically asked this last year.

If anyone can suggest something to help i would be really gratefull. I've only had 3days off work in the last month so I wasnt best pleased about this. I have contacted Devon LEA who don't want to get involved. Thanks for reading this.

  • You're not the only one who is confused!

How many modules did you actually take in 2006/07? If you only did 4 and paid for 4, how can you still owe £300 for that year?
  • I completed 4 although one was a 2nd year retake which I was never told i would have to pay for. Ive started other modul;es which i havnt completed and havnt had to pay for so i dont understand it. I took 3 3rd year modules and have 3 left.
  • Also, i think i owe £300 for that year because thats what the LEA originally sent me and I neveer recieved anything from anyone sasying I was paying for four modules.
