Lost baggage - claiming both against airline and insurer

Options
I recently arrived back in the UK and my bag did not get delivered. The value of the contents was £2000, being sports gear. The airline has paid £1000 against my claim and now I must get the rest from my travel insurance. (I have rounded the numbers for simplicity).

The baggage element of my travel insurance has a limit of £1500. The policy wording is: "We will provide cover for up to a maximum of £1,500, per insured person for personal possessions that are lost, damaged, stolen or destroyed"

None of the items exceed their single item limit or are 'valuables'.

So...

I am unsure whether they will say that they are prepared to pay only £500, on the basis that the limit is £1500 and I am getting back £1000 from the airline already, or if they will (excluding excess and wear-and-tear where relevant) pay £1000 as the difference between the total loss and the amount paid by the airline.

Does anyone have experience of this situation?

You need to speak to the Insurers. They will want a list of items lost in writing and copies of letters from the airline.

I think they should look at the loss remaining, after the airline has compensated you.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

The limit of £1500 is the most they will pay - not the most you can receive.

Hopefully TSx will see this thread as he/she will no doubt know more about how these claims work.

I can't really add much :) the limit is on the policy paying out - not overall as has been said, so you should receive the remainder of the loss from the travel insurer, although most travel insurers tend to apply fairly harsh wear and tear deductions on items.

Since you've already gone through the process of proving your loss to the airline it should be a pretty straightforward claim, just sending them copies of what you sent to the airline.
