house insurance while doing up property

Please can someone advise me? My Mum recently passed away and we are thinking about renting out her house, but it needs some work doing to it first.
As it's empty I assume it's ok to just get buildings insurance while we do the work - but I've only ever had experience of buying insurance on an annual basis.
It will take a few months to get it ready for renting. I assume if I take out an annual policy now and then rent it out in 2 or 3 months I'll have to switch to a specialist insurance policy, and assume I'll get a fee for cancelling the annual policy.
Can you take out insurance on a monthly basis or is that too expensive? Any advice would be appreciated

Google "empty property insurance short term."
Google "landlords insurance" when ready.:)The world is not ruined by the wickedness of the wicked, but by the weakness of the good. Napoleon0
