I purchased an optimus series laptop coming to just 2 years old now and I have had to apply my own thermal paste twice in this time.

First time was sept last year and again yesterday as it shut down for no reason and then I notice the CPU and MOBO temps in (speccy) were touching 85c+ idle

Temps are down now to around 40-50c idle

Operating System
Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
CPU
Intel Core i7 @ 2.50GHz 39 °C
Haswell 22nm Technology
RAM
8.00GB Single-Channel DDR3 (11-11-11-28)
Motherboard
Notebook W35xSS_370SS (SOCKET 0) 43 °C
Graphics
Generic PnP Monitor (1920x1080@60Hz)
Intel HD Graphics 4600 (CLEVO/KAPOK Computer)
2047MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M (CLEVO/KAPOK Computer) 32 °C
ForceWare version: 365.19
SLI Disabled
Storage
232GB Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB (SSD) 42 °C
232GB Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB (SSD) 44 °C

Has anyone else suffered problems like this? with this company?

I do game on it occasionally but I mainly use my desktop so laptop isn't used often so while I understand they run hot I shouldn't really have to strip it down twice a year to apply my own thermal paste?

    Have you clean the fan?

Did a google search. And find this

It did mention your laptop running hot...

Thermal paste lasting only six months suggests poor paste or application .

Not really it has been running fine and then suddenly decided yesterday after running most of the day that it was running hot.

Seems ok again now I have put some more on running at 37-42c it might be that I have to put new on every now and again.

I've built pc's before never had a problem. it's been 3 years since I last had to apply thermal paste to my desktop.

usually running at around 26c. I did notice though the other day it seemed to be running around the 40c mark idle so it might be due some thermal in the near future.

But I'm not too fussed with my desktop it has an old 965 cpu but a semi good cooler. laptops on the other hand are new to me so wasn't too sure what normal idle should be

Just an observation of course, how can you measure idle temps if running speccy? Surely speccy is running real-time measurements:eek:

...and how much is running in the background when idle ??

about 2.7 gig or ram is being used when desktop is just sat there. I'm using windows 10 not sure if that is a lot of ram being used when idle?

CPU jumps around a bit when watching it but it's usually system stuff that is accessing it while sat still.

think you may need to tweak it down a bit... look here for some inspiration, (and also turn off the things like wifi sharing and all that carp that's inbuilt)

also look for things like adobe update services being set to Automatic - it all takes memory and cpu. The leaner you have it running, the cooler it should be ;)

how do you usually use the laptop, is it on your lap, or on a soft or uneven surface, like a bed/couch, etc?

how often do you usually clean out the fans?

are you doing anything different from normal when it suddenly heats up, ie using a game/software that you dont use regularly?

laptops do run hotter than desktops, and laptops dont have the same level of cooling or airflow, high performance laptops are even worse.

what made you think it was the thermal paste that was an issue ?

Have you tried undervolting your CPU? When I buy a new laptop I run some tests to see if system is stable at a lower voltage, it's a bit fiddly but you only have to do it once. I usually knock off 5C at full load and extend battery life a bit. If memory serves last time I set this up I was getting an extra half hour from battery. Here's a link to a guide if I'm allowed to post it:

Laptop is sat on a zalman cooler with a 220mm fan but the fan when on doesn't make much difference. Usually sat on the dining room table but if it is on my lap then the cooler comes with it and placed on a laptop table with legs so no laid down flat restricting air.

When I took the cover off there was hardly any dust on the fan or the air intake/out vent but cleaned them anyway.

I do game on the laptop sometimes steam usually which does push the cpu heat up depending on the game 70c+ but comes down again once the games is closed down.

However on the day it had been left running for about 4hrs idle until I went on it to browse the net and it shut down booting it back up showed the cpu temp at 86c.

The only thing I don't recall was the cpu fan kicking in even when it shut down it hadn't spun up to cool it and mine sounds like a 747 taking off at full speed.

Why do I think it was thermal paste needed well after ruling out something faulty or dust it was the next obvious choice and since adding it temp have been around 40c with it jumping to 70c when doing a full system scan with Norton yesterday.

Other than ruling out software failer to tell the fan to spin up it could be something else I'll keep my eye on it.

As for the cooling on the casing there isn't much air vents only 2 on the under side and one at the back for the cpu fan so it could be poor case design.

Speccy reports the motherboard temp about the same as the cpu as when that heats up so does the inside of the case
