I wouldn't tape the walls, just paint carefully, with a small brush on the top edge if necessary. I always find tape pulls the paint off no matter how carefully I apply & remove it!

I am just terrible at cutting in and I just know that if I try this free hand I will get it on the walls. I was hoping that the delicate frog tape stuff would see me through. I have a plastic thing, made by Harris, that is supposed to be for cutting in so maybe I will give that a go and try to be careful with the paint.

I was just about to suggest a paint shield. That'll do the trick if you don't want to go freehand. Freehand is better though as sometimes you need to create the line that isn't technically the real line if that makes sense?
Some people don't exaggerate........... They just remember big!

Ah thanks, yes I think I know what you mean but I am so bad at it that freehand would be a disaster. The line that I would create would, in places, be up the wall! :)

It is easier to cut in with a bigger brush. 2.5 inches at least.

Get some scotch pad from a trade paint place and rub all the wood you want to paint, it will key the surface and will be much quicker and easier than sanding. Then paint freehand (I can almost guarantee you will have problems with paint peeling from the walls or paint bleeding past the tape!) with a large brush. Keep a small tub of water and a cloth close by for any mishaps.

I found a paint guard really hard to use,

decent brush improved the cutting in confidence getting the right paint load for a decent stoke was the harder bit practice on top of the door architrave you cant see the mistakes.

Thank you everyone for your help. So I think I am going to take everything you guys have said and try doing it freehand with a large brush and see how I go. If I make a mistake it is not the end of the world and I'd rather that than frog tape taking the paint off!
