Historical bank charges are not recoverable. The Banks won their court case about this in 2009.

The only two areas considered nowadays are
1 - incorrect application of charges (i.e. charged wrong amount or for wrong service)
    2 - CURRENT financial hardship.

Incorrect application is rare. So, lets ignore that.
CURRENT financial hardship requires the bank to be giving a current banking service. That eliminates closed accounts straight away. it also requires you to be in current financial hardship. Not hardship in the past.

Hardship cases also do not require the bank to refund anything. That is just one option open to them. They can suspend charges for the next 6 months or put you on a debt management process. If they do decide to refund then often its only the last 3-6 months worth. Sometimes 12 months if you are lucky. Some extreme hardship cases have gone back further but it really all depends on the level of current hardship and how well you can get the bank to correctly see the level of hardship you are in.

if you are not in hardship, then the bank will not consider refunds on charges. The "unfair" charges issue has long since gone (2009 the banks won that case).
