Benefit entitlement after redundancy

Hi

A friend of mine has been made redundant. He has no children under 18 and lives in his own home which he has a mortgage on.

Is be entitled to any benefits until he finds a new job or would he not be entitled to anything as he has a mortgage.

Thanks

He may be entitled to JSA.

They'd look at contributions based first.

as above, entitled to JSA for 26 weeks - contributions based regardless of savings etc.

After 26 weeks, entitled to "Income based" JSA, if no savings

Also may be entitled to Support for Mortgage Interest (SMI) if he still hasn't found a job after 39 weeks.

Does he have any insurance to cover the mortgage in the event of redundancy?

So what does this mean, they look at how much assets he owns etc?

After 6 months, they will look at the savings and assets he has, excluding the house.

If they are less than £6k he will be entitled to benefits.

For the first 6 months he is entitled to benefits anyway (assuming he has been working and paying national insurance for the last 2 years)

Yes he has been working for the last 8 years and Paying NI contributions, tax etc

So even if he has savings and will get a redundancy payment he should be entitled to JSA for the first 6 months?

Standard seems to be fortnightly sign in and provide evidence he is job hunting.

He will not be made attend course for the first few months at least
