It's my understanding that they cannot make you have a meter. The water co may prefer it. And lots of homeowners prefer it.

A few years ago my meter was in an inconvenient place in middle of the house, in a place which was going to be the middle of my new kitchen floor, due to extension. Water co wouldn't move it without charging a fortune. My builder told me to ask them if we could remove it, said he'd done that before. Water co said no, would be very naughty. Builder confronted him, and water co man admitted they wouldn't do anything if we took it out, so my builder removed it, did the kitchen, all done. Happy. I went on to unmetered charges. Some months later the water co suggested we might like a meter. Oh yes please I said .... They fitted it FOC in the pavement and all was fine and dandy.

Point is, check carefully whether it is a requirement that you must have a meter, or whether there is an option not to. You might be able to get around it.

You might be able to save a bit on you bills if you can find out whether or not your surface water (from guttering etc.,) goes to a soakaway. If it does and you find you are paying for surface water drainage contact the water company, they'll refund any charges you've paid since moving in and remove the charge from all future bills.
I've recently done this and have had nearly 7 years worth of charges credited back to my account, which covers my water bill for almost the next 2 years :T

I will never understand why people are perfectly happy to pay for whatever gas or electric that they use, but don't feel the same with their water... :undecided

Because they see water falling from the sky and think, therefore, that it should be free.

Anyone with a swimming pool should have a meter.

The Water Industry (Prescribed Conditions) Regulations 1999 (legal bit)
Why shouldn't they pay for what they have used? (moral bit)
