How common is this? Giving interview result verbally

Just after the most strangest scare today and not the way I was expecting to hear (plus late and past 'promised' date not good signs I know..even worse could be the no news is good news bit suppose..) I am wondering how common is it to give interview result by phone? especially when it might not be positive and you are not the successful candidate.
Does it still happen? I don't know I just thought it would be easier in this day and age to send emails or least even take advantage of a voicemail facility when there is no answer! It wasn't really a 100% telephony role either in which I could understand verbal contact a bit more would come into it perhaps.
I did wonder if it was give job to first person that answers but again thought that didn't exist nowadays and it didn't tie in with the particular interview process. (they just didn't come across that desperate during recruitment and were quite professional all the way through till now when it has turned a bit weird) Just little mystified at the mo!

Whenever I've had feedback from an interview it's been over the phone. That way they can say more than just whether or not you got the job.
I've never really put much thought into it but maybe recruiters prefer to give feedback verbally rather than have physical evidence in an e-mail.0 -
When at the other side of the table (I.e. recruiting) I have always phoned all candidates with the news, the successful one first, followed by definite nos followed by my 2nd choice once the first has accepted the offer. I just thought it was courteous that way, allowed me to provide feedback and leave them with a good impression of the company (they might be food candidates who I'd like to consider again!)
As an applicant, I have had a mixture of experiences - my first job offer was by phone, my second by email, the third by phone and the fourth by phone as well (only the last was an agency).
Rejections - I had two by phone, both times I couldn't take the call, one left a voice mail and asked me to call back, the other sent an email offering to speak later if I wanted to. The other one was by letter (a council), never had one by email. All direct, no agencies involved.
So yes, it still happens! (All of these were IT roles by the way, not involving telephony).0 -
Thank you peeps, golly gosh it turned out the decision making went to an some sort of central resourcing team, after the interview process at company, was just more shocked as I wasn't expecting it with the interviewers at the company saying I could contact them even after interview with any questions and them doing the initial screening so it seemed like it was the personal touch so I didn't even think to question it, anyway it was probably for the best as it made it so easier in fairness to bow out before hearing anymore as I wasn't sure it was the right job anyhow, thanks again, definitely interesting.
Learnt something new definitely, think that old classic question of when could I be hearing needs a revamp to will it be you letting me know! hee hee : )0 -
Yes, we phone all interview candidates, which I think is potentially awkward if unsuccessful but it's a decision made by the managers.Signature removed for peace of mind0
