Looking for a good cordless edging trimmer

I've currently got a Black and Decker, I think, with the plastic cord thing. The problem is, whenever it hits anything thicker than a blade of grass, it breaks. It's got to the point where I don't even bother using it now. :o

Can anyone reccommend a cordless one that doesn't break with every use? Do they do metal blades on these things?

I'm willing to pay a fair price for a good one that will last.

Thanks

If you want something with a metal blade, that's called a 'brushcutter' and often a strimmer head and blade can be interchangeable on the same body with change of blade guard etc.

We bought a cheapish one of those from a DIY shed to deal with our rough grass/ weed area. It got nicked when the garage was broken into but it wasn't running well at all so their loss!

For the edge of the lawn at the moment, i'm using long handled shears as there are lots of drooping plants in the way- another longer job

I use a small petrol stirimmer and have learned how to cut a really neat edge on a lawn with it turned 90 degrees to the ground. Defo worth it if you have a lot of metres to cover. Mine is a tanaka tbc230s, low vibrations, reliable, cheap to run. Around £230.

I still cut the soil off the edges once a year with a half moon.
  • Thank you. Not sure I'm willing to spend that much actually. :o :rotfl:

I have a cordless Bosch and it works really well. I used to have an electric one but the cord was never long enough and a bit of a danger really. I charge it up on a sunny day so it costs me nothing as I have solar panels! I think it was about £70. It's quite light and easy to use and believe it or not, persuaded me to buy a cordless Dyson.

Check out the G-Tech website, I think they are starting to make gardening equipment.

I have one of their vacuum cleaners and am very impressed.

The key is to buy the right tool for the job and regular strimming.
Most people only cut the lawn when ....

    A. They are having a party/BBQ
    B. it starts to look untidy/Long
C.The suns out and its a nice day.

Then out comes the mower and strimmer.

The trick is to cut and strim the lawn every week from April/May up until Sept/Oct .
Ease off during Nov/Dec, light trim Feb/March.

Most of the strimmers sold with the spool and line would cope with the above no problem.
Sadly people expect a DIY strimmer to hack through a month or two worth of growth ( For such task a petrol strimmer is needed)

Now not knowing your garden I cannot recommend a strimmer for you .

But if you have a large area that you need to strim then a light weight Petrol would suit.
But if all you are doing is strimming the edge of the lawn then unless the lawn is up against a wall or patio then a pair of edging shears is what you need or a basic strimmer like the Bosch one .
And use it every week and you will not have a problem.
