cant claim help to buy isa :(

The time recently came to close my help to buy isa, I took my closing statement to my solicitor, who I have already paid around £200 for certain checks that have to be done, only to find out that they aren't registered with the scheme, so they wont claim my £550 off the government. I'm disappointed that there was no mention on the tv program or on this site advising people to make sure your solicitor is registered with the scheme, maybe naïve of me but I thought any solicitor would make the claim. has this happened to anyone else?

  • Oh No!
We are possibly in a similar situation.
We are due to complete next Monday and our solicitor admitted only last week that they were not 'registered' for the scheme.
We are making them register as we made them aware we had the ISA very close to choosing them which was in February.
They best not charge me the 50+ Vat they are allowed to come completion day considering I had to forward them all of the information I could find.

How long did you wait on your closing letter? We closed on Saturday and they said it could take up to two weeks for us to get that letter.

Im freaking out because if we dont manage to complete next week we cant do it until mid june because of the vendors 2 week holiday!!
  • My closing letter took 7 days I think, I'm going to go in and try to really push them to register for the scheme and claim it for me. I just stupidly went with a local solicitor that was highly recommended by more than one person I know without even thinking that they might not claim it for me. fingers crossed I can convince them.

    good luck
  • Oh No.. Solicitors are so bad!
There should be a law for conveyancing solicitors to be signed up to things like that! Otherwise whats the point.

Our solicitor didn't realise this when we mentioned it, we will their first HTB. She did it in minutes when I said it would be a requirement of us instructing them so it's a fairly easy fix.

To get the bonus, the account must be closed so she cannot keep paying in to it.

Solicitors are allowed to charge up to £50 for handling it, of course they will charge the maximum!

Why should solicitors provide their services for free?

Can she close the account and get the bonus 3 months AFTER she has moved in to her FIRST TIME FLAT?
