Having more babies following complication.

Hi,

My last pregnancy (3rd) ended in a me having to have a spinal to remove a retained placenta (cord broke away).

I'm naturally worried that this will happen again.

Has anyone experienced this and gone onto having more babies with no issues of this sort?

Not sure whether it is relevant but I have 3 children, no c-sections, am type 2 diabetic, pre-eclampsia in 2nd pregnancy.

Thanks!

My mum had a retained placenta with me- i was the eldest. She went on to have 3 more children without a reoccurance
  • I think you should ask an experienced midwife or obstetrician. Hopefully it will be totally fine with no risk to future pregnancies but definitely not worth going ahead without professional assurances. Your 3 children need you to be around and I think the risk with this is more a maternal one than a risk to the baby. Best wishes :)

As long as the placenta was removed and if you had a subsequent infection this was dealt with properly, there should be no problem.

Would check with midwife/GP but I know my friend was told if you have had it once more likely to have it again but not a big deal. She was advised to have a physiological 3rd stage rather than a managed one for subsequent pregnancy but everything was fine.
  • I had retained placenta with both mine. The first time was a rush to theatre, the second a planned c-section due to the risk.

The second was worse than the first. Afterwards the obstetrician warned me that having another baby would at least mean a hysterectomy, at worst I would bleed out. I was awake throughout the drama and it was certainly not an experience I would wish to repeat.

We decided that me being around for my two girls was more important than another child so I was steralised.

Saying that my mother had it with her first and went on to have 2 more with no complications.

It's a decision only you can make but I would advise you to discuss it with your obstetrician as they can see your records and guage how severe your case was.

MY daughter did with her first but not the second.. she also had a PPH with both.. neither experience put her off more children .. the 9 months of vomiting day and night did though!

Noone can predict what will or will not happen if you have another child so if you want one, make that decision with your other half. I've been told all manner of scary crap and as yet not one single thing has happened that they threatened would.. At least they would be more vigilant and be prepared for something similar happening rather than it all being a shock and emergency nsurely that is a good thing?

  • You need to make an appointment to go back and see a midwife or obstetrician so that they can review your notes and discuss it with you. It wouldn't be a reason for you not to have another child necessarily though.

    I'm a midwife

You are at higher risk of having another manual removal than if you've never had one before, but the odds are still in your favour that you won't

This study http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22882191 says risks go from 7% to 25% - however their cut off for retained placenta was 30 minutes, whereas in the UK it's an hour so you will have some women who wouldn't have counted and the rates going down due to that (I had 20% chance of recurrence in my head before I decided to try and back it up)

The main risk with retained placenta is associated postpartum haemorrage (which you don't mention whether you had) - cord snapping tends to be a random occurance (more common with premature babies or with a velementous insertion of the cord (occasionally these get picked up by scan)

TBH you'd be counted as high risk due to the diabetes anyway

I retained with my first child. I have since had another baby with no complications at all. I asked about it at the time and was told the chances of it happening were really low and not to worry.
    Smart price rocks!
