"so if you're on a ... cash-operated prepay meter you'll unfortunately have to look elsewhere."

I don't think any supplier uses cash-operated prepay meters anymore, so if anyone does happen to have one, I think it's probably privately operated (e.g. via the landlord) and so those using it will not be able to change supplier anyway. :)
  • I have`nt seen a cash operated prepay meter ever ! are they still around ? Some coin operated gas meters still float about but they were converted to card. Token operated are also redundant. Outside of Ovo and Utilita they are all key for electric and card for gas.

In my childhood (1950s) everyone had pay as you go meters (taking shillings ie 5 pence in today's money) and there was often a call of, 'Put a shilling in the gas, before the oven goes off.'

Yes, I ve heard about them from retired meter readers where part of the job was going round emptying them and carrying around a sack of shilling coins. Also tales of how some people managed to fiddle them. One good fiddle was to make a copy of the shilling piece out of ice, then the evidence melts once its gone through the slot.

I grew up with a 50p electric meter in the house, we were forever storing up 50 pence pieces (these were the big ones), or running to a neighbour to see if they had any we could swap!

Meter man day was quite an event, as us kids would always get the overpayment 50p's back as our pocket money! Those were the days! :D

Does anybody else think that things are so easy and automated these days that they a no longer any fun? :rotfl:

My gran's electric meter was in her coal cellar. Cold and spooky place that I would be first to volunteer to go and put money in the meter. Happy days! Probably part of the reason why to this day, I appreciate the cost of utilities. :)
