find home builder

Hi All,

I have some home improvements which are not small but not large either

I have rang many people found on FMB database and all say they do not take on the work as it is small or they are booking for 2017.

I can hardly find any one .what is your recommandation?

it is not small job , I need a wall taking down, garage extended, chimney breast removed so around 10kish and garage extended .

I guess they all have too much work and a pocket full of money hence refusing work

To many builders that is a small job.

And a good builder will already be booked up. We were lucky to get the firm who did our works at a time at the end of one job- by the end of ours, boss wasn't taking any more work on for about 18 months!

If you want it done, you're going to have to wait, but get it booked in

Can someone recommend you to a builder?

It is small work for many of us, but potentially something that could be done with a bit of spare labour, or over a few weekends for the lads.

People say that it's good to get recommendations for good builders, but the point is also that good builders like referals from good clients! I'm far more likely to talk to a good client's friend for a small job than a stranger. I'd have no interest in bidding against other builders for a job like that.

  • You could try a local Architect for recommendations. Some may not feel able to recommend - but many will :).

I would recommend that you consider the following factors when finding a builder to undertake your work:
    • Price: not always the most important factor for some people, but clearly your builder must be able to work to your budget.
    • Experience: can your proposed builder show you examples their house extension or loft conversion work?
    • Quality: if you can view examples, are they of a quality that you would be happy with?
    • Reputation: can you get positive references from people that have used the builder before?
    • Reliability: prior to starting, it’s hard to judge how organised and reliable your builder will be. So watch out for whether they turn up for your meeting on time, return your phone calls and submit quotes when they say they will.
    Hope this helps :)

Try putting your requirements on a site like mybuilder or myworkman and see who gets back to you, get some quotes then if you are unsure about the builders reputation just have a word with your local building control office - they should happily give you impartial views of the builder if they know them.
