Auto to Manual licence learners insurance

Hi all,

I have a question regarding car insurance for someone who has a full Automatic licence and wishes to upgrade or convert to a manual.

My wife has a full UK Automatic licence and her own (auto) car which she is fully comp insured on with Tesco bank. I am also a named driver on her policy as it makes it slightly cheaper.

I have a full UK Manual licence and my own policy with Hastings on my (manual) car.

I want to teach her how to drive a manual vehicle in my own car.

Would I need to add her as a learner to my policy or would she be covered under her policy? And would we need to inform her insurance company?

Sorry if it sounds like dumb questions but I can't find anything online regarding insurance for auto to manual licence conversion and I don't want to waste my time on hold to insurance companies, until I know which one I need to inform.

Thanks for your time.

I would think she any existing insurance would only cover for the class of licence held so I wouldn't think either would currently cover her to drive a manual car.

I find the best advice when it comes to insurance situations is to phone the company and ask. Better than guessing and dropping in the proverbial at a later date.
  • She would be considered a learner from the DVLA perspective while she is driving a manual car. Halfords have a reasonable learner policy that my partner took out - about £80 for 4 weeks - which adds learner fully comp to my car under my own policy.

You might be able to get her added to your insurance quite cheaply though - give them a call and ask.

I think the conversion is a red herring.

If her policy covers her to drive your car, it will be third party only. Read the driving other cars section of her policy and her certificate.

If you want comprehensive cover, add her to your policy.
