Contract/Annual leave

Hi

Need your advise please.

I am a permanent member of staff in team A. There are a few contractors working in Team B doing similar sort of stuff I do. The contractors get paid twice as I do but their knowledge is limited compared to mine in the field I work in. I have done secondment in Team B to help out with some of the work load in the past for a few weeks alongside these contractors. I think that they were not disappointed with my work.

I am in a desperate need of raising cash now for personal reasons but don't want to lose my permanent job and be risk averse by quitting my perm job and going into contracting.
I thought about using my two weeks annual leave to do a similar role in another institution but that seems impossible as everyone is after at-least 3 months contract in my field.

One of the contractors told me he is going on a holiday for two weeks from Team B. I was wondering would it be a bad idea if I approached the senior manager of Team B and ask him if he would like me to cover for that contractor? Of course this would be based on my leave booking with my Team A manager.

Will this damage me anyway? If you think it is a good idea how do I approach Team B manager- should I just walk in to his office?

The other option is for me to go into Sabattical for 6 months-1 year and going into contracting (I work for a University although not an academic but in IT). I don't think Sabattical is allowed in my area but I wonder if it its worth asking my manager anyway? My manager is very difficult guy and I am worried to even asking these questions and he starts looking at my long term intentions.

Thank you,
