What can I claim

I am going through a separation from my husband, we own a business together that has its own accommodation, my husband will continue running the business and I am going to be moving out into rented accommodation, our 13 year old will come live with me.
I also have a part time job but the business where I work is due to close in about 3 months time (these things are never timed perfectly!) and I will be out of work. My intention is that I will find another part time job.
At the moment, I do not have any current child/working tax credit claims as jointly we have previously earned too much but wondered if I would be entitled to make a single persons claim along with housing benefit when I find somewhere to live and also have a new job. I estimate that I would be looking to earn approx £10k for 22-24 hours weekly work.
Can someone with good knowledge of the system please advise me as when I try find out online, it is so confusing and slightly scary!
thanks

Why won't you be looking for a full-time job?

On an income of £10,000 and working between 16-29hrs you'd get approx £112 per week assuming no childcare or disabilities.

If you worked 30+hrs there is an additional element of tax credits. So if you worked 30hrs and earned £12,500 (based on rate of pay 24hrs @ £10,000) you'd get £108 tax credits but obviously be earning more.

Is there a reason why you can't work full time?

You'd also get child benefit £20.70 per week.

Help with rent and council tax would depend on your council. Try a benefit calculator such as entitledto or turn2us
  • Thank you for your reply. I will look at one of the websites you suggested. My plan is to work a minimum part time, if I can find a full time job that fits around childcare, that would obviously be better financially for me. At this stage, I am unsure of what jobs are available but once I start looking, I will have a much better idea.

You mention that you and your husband own a business and that your husband will continue to run it.

Will you be receiving any income from this business that you will need to include in your calculations?

One thing to be aware of when making a single TC claim whilst separating from your spouse, is that HMRC have a policy that the separation should be intended to be permanament.

If you and your husband reconciled in the furure, then it may useful to have the evidence to prove to HMRC that the seperation was intended to be permament to prevent HMRC reclaiming "overpayments".
