Are we eligible for any help at all

Hi All and thanks in advance

I am getting really confused trying to find out if we are eligible for any help while my other half is off sick or not

The story is he was in a car accident on the 6th March and was originally told he had post concussion syndrome. Around the 9th April he took a dramatic downturn and was put in hospital for nearly a week turns out we are now looking at a nasty brain injury and he needs a lot of treatment going forward so he will be eligible for PIP however they talk of a 3 month period do we go from when he was first injured as he had problems then or from when he got worst? We still don't have an exact diagnosis and awaiting for a referral to neurology to come through

Am I eligible for any carer assistant even though I work full time I have to help him shower, deal with all his medical appointment bookings and management, cook, clean and do all his banking and administration work

Also I've been told it's a 16 week wait for an assessment for PIP so can we pre apply knowing he will still be ill at that point and will it get back dated all that time?

He is only receiving SSP at the moment so we have lost a £1000 of monthly income over night. The TP insurance company are dragging their feet and my insurance company hasn't given us an update in nearly 3 I am tearing my hair out with worry and making myself sick in the process and I just don't know where we stand any more

I tried calling DWP but their wait time is over an hour :(

He has to have had the difficulties for 3 months and expected them to last for at further 9 months.

You wouldn't be entitled to carers allowance if you earn more than £110 per week (after taxes, 50% pension contributions and care costs)

How many hours do you work and what do you earn?

Who will care for him while you work?

You can make the claim before the 3 months are up but you would not be paid from your claim only from when the 3 months are up (dreadful sentence, apologies.

So get that PIP claim in now. Get some help from CAB to complete the form and start collecting any medical evidence you have - ask your doctor for any reports from hospitals if you haven't got them. You can always send extra medical evidence later if there is more information.

How much do you earn? (see above post about Carer's Allowance)

I see you have also posted this elsewhere so won't repeat that information about social services assessment.

Cheers I'll get started on it now thanks

I work 35 hours a week earning about £1300 a month so won't be eligible

he is able to do a couple of bits himself but gets tired easily with cognitive fatigue so some days are better than others but I end up doing most things as by about 3ish he's done even early if he has an appointment.

Thank you again for your help

  • If you want to speak to the DWP try first thing or later in the day around 5pm for a faster reply, if you have a mortgage speak to the lender now see what help they can offer e.g an interest only period.
Apart form PIP a lot will depend on what you earn.
