Paypal credit does not work with all retailers. In those cases you can only pay with direct debit (if set up) or debit card. Not sure why. Guess it will be the retailers that dont accept credit cards, as fees are higher.0

When you say you've paid by paypal credit before is this with the same retailer? if it is not then it is because certain retailers don't allow paypal credit, the easiest way is to try to pay with paypal and change your payment method to paypal credit if it is listed, if it is not then the retailer/paypal won't allow. A good example is gambling.
If it is the same retailer then they or paypal have withdrawn the offer, also a point to note it can be the device your using, on my mobile at domino pizza i can't use paypal credit but on the computer i can.

I am trying to pay for somethingi bought from gumtree so its not retailer0

Suspect as Gumtree is individual sellers it won't be allowed. If you don't have the option then you will have to try and source from a company that does use paypal and paypal credit can be used.
