Past due credit debt from 2011

I've just had a 2nd letter from past due credit solutions,
the first was for £780.89, i didn't know what it was about so after doing some research thought i would wait for a second letter, it came today for £390.45.
I've managed to talk to the hmrc, 3 phone calls and 4 different people, the debt is for family tax credits, i split with my partner in 2011, left her with everything house and everything inside (it was easier then going through court)
They have said they've tried writing to me, i haven't received anything i was in full time employment till 2 years ago, they said it was sent to my previous address? even though i didn't live there!! surely because i was paying paye they could of found my address simply enough.
I've been told a few different things in the past, do I
a try and speak to the company and come to an arrangement
b wait till next year so the debt is 5 years old and ignore it
c when i left she was left with everything i just took my clothes and she had anything else. and we severed financial ties, i left with the debt and she was taking care of everything else, tax credits and house hold
would anybody have any advice? I'm just slightly above minimum wage and am paying the csa every month! so its a struggle!!

Tax Credit Office would not know you had moved if you( or someone else ) did not advise them or the letter was returned as undelivered.
There is no significance on the debt being 5 years old. It is still payable so coming to an arrangement to pay would be the sensible action.
Tax credit debt is payable by either or both parties. It looks like your partner has paid half, leaving half for you to pay.0 -
The debt to HmRC will never become statute barred.
If it was a DWP debt they could potentially attach your earnings to recover if- I don't know if this can be done for tax credit debts. Might be wise to make an offer to repay rather than ignoring it.
Would be interested to know if tax credits can get a DEA if anyone knows?0 -

HMRC don't do attachment of earnings but can adjust tax code to recover it that way.0 -

Does it work like the DWP/councils in that it's a last resort when they have tried to recover via an arrangement?
Thanks DS. Despite working in benefits for a very very long time tax credits still confuse me!!0
