Hi all
I am currently employed full time however have been on sick leave the past 2 weeks because my dad has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and I'm struggling to cope with balancing the stress of the job (there is a lot of pressure in this role) and dealing with my dad's diagnosis.
I've chosen to move near my mother to support her which is a further distance from current work (about one and a half hours on buses)
I really want to quit and get a small part time job (there is no option to go part time in my current role) until my dad dies so I can see him as much as possible and then after this happens go back to full time work.
I worry that if I do this I won't be eligible for any benefits as I've made the choice to quit a full time job.
I've done the online benefits check to see what I would be eligible to based on the fact if I got a part time job but I can't find anywhere if it would be a problem if I've chosen to leave a job.
I would appreciate any advice
Thanks X

I'm sorry to hear about your dad. It's a very difficult time for you, but would your dad want you to give up a decent job?
Instead of quitting, could you ask for reduced hours as a temporary option? Or work compressed hours (four long days instead of five normal days)? You could also ask for unpaid leave, although I realise that financially this may not be possible.0 -
You won't get anything if you quit your job. Sorry
only if you quit without good reason, and it is up to a decision maker to decide what is good reason.
the OP also says they will work part time and so wouldn't be claiming JSA anyway.
OP... what are your circumstances
age?
single/couple?
children?
rent?
another option would be to stay on SSP if you're struggling emotionally. this is paid for 28 weeks0 -
Thanks guys.
Unfortunately I'm not able to reduce down to part time at work and my only option is to work full time take unpaid leave or quit. I have used my holiday entitlement already.
Also circumstances are 28 /single /no children/ live with friend renting a flat private tenant
If I was to stay on ssp am I right to think you can claim housing benefit
Appreciate the advice0 -
yes, you could claim housing benefit if on a low income.
is your doctor willing to give you fit notes?0 -
Sorry to hear about your father, it is not uncommon to be grieving now when told he is dying. As nannytone has stated you could stay on SSP if your GP issues notes and claim some HB due to reduced income. It is only JSA that is affected if you quit your job.The most potent weapon of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed. Steve Biko0

Couldn't you take unpaid leave from your FT job and still take on a PT job? That way you'd have a job to go back to.0
