Do I have to use a Main Agent for service?

I always use main dealers for servicing and have found them willing to negotiate on the price. For my car, I also supply my own oil for them to use which saves another £100.0

At dealer prices, it's easy for oil to hit £100. Anything reasonably powerful/turbocharged/larger engined will no doubt have 'manufacturer recommended' "Castrol Insano Baby-Pterodactyl-tears FST SlickPro Ultralube-3000 LongLife" at ~£15 a litre.
Hell, the oil for my motorbike will cost me £70 for 3.5 litres when I get it serviced in a couple of weeks.0 -

There is a garage near me that does very good work and is licensed for MOTs - I have used them before and always been pleased. However if I will void the warranty then I will take the car further afield.
Can anyone offer an opinion?
Thanks.
What car is it? How far away is the nearest main dealer now? How lucky do you feel? You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose but you can't pick your friend's nose.0 -

I had an early lesson in this from my Dad. He queried the cost of an oil change at a main dealer and was told the cost was calculated on the retail price per litre. So the car needed (say) 7.5 litres, and he was charged 8x the unit cost for a litre bottle. ("Sorry, Sir, we have to charge you for eight as they don't do it in half-litres.") When he asked where they kept all the oil the used on customers' cars, he was shown a 40-gallon drum in the back of the workshop, a can and a funnel.BeenThroughItAll wrote: »At dealer prices, it's easy for oil to hit £100. I have no problem with garages having a reasonable mark-up on goods they supply, but this was taking the micturition. If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0
