you dont get much bean pattern out of a mini headight at the best of timers so doing the wall thing is next to useless
if it is indeed a sealed beam unit 7 inch? then its most probably lost some of its reflective sheen nside the sealed beam unit
if its a later lamp where a bulb can be fitted then as suggested its usually because the bulb isnt seated properly
one word of caution cheap bulbs from the internet often have the plate attached to the bulb afixed slightly wrong so these bulbs never give a proper pattern so its always sensible to buy bulbs from a local trusted supplier

Ahh, the days of drawing chalk marks on the garage wall to check the lights before an MOT.

The other thing that can fail headlights is where the plastic lens has clouded due to UV damage making the pattern indistinguished (obviously doesn't apply to glass headlights). However the lenses can be polished up with wet n' dry and G3.

Absolutely, I'm sure some people just look for faults even when none exist.

Take it to a council run place - they'll pass it

Check the bulb(s) are the right way around. An easy mistake to make and can cause the wrong beam pattern. It happened to me once.

As per pc1271 - make sure that the bulbs are the right ones & correctly seated; if it's the actual light units at fault, they're only £25 a pair to buy new anyway...
