Having a puppy is like having a newborn baby which rapidly progresses through the toddler stages. It's incredibly hard work but extremely rewarding. You will need endless amounts of patience during these first few critical months, as well as consistency and to praise whenever pup behaves how you would like. Never tell the puppy off, it just creates mistrust.

If you think this stage is bad, wait until she starts teething and turns into a mini land shark :rotfl:

She is teething already - extremely bitey with sharp little teeth !!
She goes in spurts - she is good for perhaps 1/2 hour - then runs around like a demented she devil for 10 minutes biting everything around her !!

Haha, they are a real nightmare at first, in a few months you'll forget how hard it was. You'll also forget anything related to being house proud!

My dog is 3 now but I remember when she would run around the house like a loon. We worked out that she was actually over-tired by this stage and would put her to bed in her crate. Once she had the opportunity to lie down and switch off she slept for quite a while.
We carried on as normal when she was crated.

I can't remember if you mentioned children? My kids were trained alongside the pup! If pup was sleeping then she was left alone. Still holds true now. If dog is sleeping she's left alone.

As an afterthought we also worked out that peanut butter sent her loopy! We used to stuff her kong with biscuit and peanut butter.
  • I soon realised that our dog, when a pup, would bite when he was tired shortly before he went to sleep.

I read some where at the time that if you yelped when he bit that would help it stop ...something to do with what pups do when they play.

Oh yeah, I forgot, R used to run round like a loon before needing a number 2, for about ten minutes.

As for the biting- it's how puppies play with each other. You need to be very over exaggerated with 'ouch' and take hands etc away, or offer a toy instead. Don't let the biting become a habit She's probably not teething yet, just playing how she would with her siblings but needs to learn how to play with humans

I remember the biting stage too lol. Her teeth were like little needles.

I also used the exaggerated yelp and also withdrew my hands and ignored her for about 20 seconds - no eye contact - nothing. She learned very quickly that biting stopped play. Very effective.

I know I mentioned lots of toys earlier but by keeping her stimulated and providing toys witn different textures we managed to avoid her chewing and destroying household items. Maybe there was an element of luck too - I don't know!

The only thing she has attacked was a very soft bed we bought for holidays (because it was squishy and easy to pack) but it was made woth lots of threads running around it and she has pulled these and scruffed up the bed pad lol. I can't complain though it could have been much worse! Have since bought a cushion type bed and she hasn't even tried to attack it.

If you find your pup has loads of energy, try some puzzle games. Petplanet has loads with different ability levels. Tiring out the brain will help calm her as will short intense training sessions x
