I can't remember ever doing that, it was a long time ago.One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -
One of my Uni lecturers was involved in the design of early ICL machines.
When I started programming it was in assembler on IBM 370s then on VM/CMS systems as well as DEC Vax BSD Unix.4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . Aint no sunshine ☀️ Octopus gas fixed dec 24 @ 5.74 tracker again+ Octopus Intelligent Flux leccy0 -
I remember programming in machine code (well a few of my college I.T. courses covered it)
I remember dabbling in machine code mnemonics on the old Z80 microprocessor in my trusty Amstrad CPC6128 -- ah, Amstrad may have been mocked, but that was a great machine for learning the basics of programming. If I met Alan Sugar, I'd shake his hand just for that.
To get down to the bare-bones, I even wrote a little "Hello world" program in pure machine code (as in, binary). God that took a careful eye and a lot of time to type in!
And, oh, typing in programs from magazines... and playing text-only adventure games! Ah... those were the days!0 -
I think this thread has descended into a worrying level of Nostalgia...!0

I wrote machine code on my ZX Spectrum, as that didn't have an assembler. Started writing assembly language on the BBC Micro as the BBC BASIC ROM came with an excellent assembler built in.Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230

You could pick up a cheap R-Pi or Arduino board + some I/O devices and have fun!
Their are loads of code projects you could get your teeth into.

Pis are great little devices.
We have a wood pellet burner which is fed pellets via an auger from a 10 ton pellet bin. Once in a blue moon the auger sticks and overheats and stops the wood pellet burner from firing up. Of course, then you've no heat / hot water. Always happens in the midst of winter too and you only find out in a cold shower!!
I got a Pi and a USB thermostat and wrote a piece of code to send me a text if the auger went above its normal working temperature so i could go out and clear it before it became a problem.
We also are tropical fish keepers / breeders so i'm going to have one monitor our tanks for temperature drops / rises - either of which could kill a tank of fish.0 -
I just googled to find out what's ZX Spectrum.. turned out I haven't even been born when it was released hahaWe’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
