Maintenance Loan
Options
Hi there,
My daughter has applied for a maintenance loan for Sept 2016 at university. I've entered our joint income but we earn too much so it won't help with her loan. Does that mean she gets nothing?? Is there a non income based part of the maintenance loan. We have 0 savings. All our income goes straight back out but they don't look at this. Any help appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Cariad,
the rules just changed for people starting this year. Their used to be a maintenance grant which has now gone i think, but again this was income based.
Call student finance england whi i personally have found really helpful, they will give you the lowdown.
If that is the case then your options are somewhat limited but include 1. Going to a local uni and remain living at home or with family elsewhere. 2. Working through uni, lots of people do and manage just fine. 3. A big rejig of family spending in order to support her. An Soa on the DFW forum may show potential savings to be made. 4.Scholarships - unlikely to fund anywhere near the whole cost and can be very competitive, but little bits helps.
This system of 'parents pay' has been in existence for a very long time now, how come its caught you by surprise?£1000 Emergency fund No90 £1000/1000

Obviously I will support her. But my question is 'is there a non income based element to the maintenance loan'? I haven't been caught off guard, the law changed as from this year.Starting balance £173,000 (Sept 2012) interest only so if we do nothing We will owe this at the end of the term😁😁

yes, a pretty simple google search will show you that 65% of the maintenace loan isnt means tested.
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/students/student-loans-tuition-fees-changes item 10 on ths page
Or here, or any of the first page google results for 'maintenance loans rules'

You are right the rules did change but not the principle of parent paying so i guess this would have been the same situation last year, slightly different different detail. Anyway the good news if you can afford to support her, she will get some maintenance loan, i hope she has a fab time!£1000 Emergency fund No90 £1000/1000

That's not what the OP asked.
https://www.gov.uk/student-finance/new-fulltime-students
It clearly has maintenance loans on the page.0 -
Cariad would you happen to live in Wales by any chance? If so best to disregard most of the replies you are likely to get here as Wales has a very different approach to Student funding when compared with England.0
