Window locks

Options
We are in the process of getting a house ready to let and have noticed that some of the window handles have locks while others don't. The handles all look the same so we think they are the original even though some don't have locks. Can anyone tell me if there is a requirement for locking handles to be fitted on all windows? We don't want to go down the route of changing if we don't need to. The house is 11 years old.

There's no requirement to have locks.

But, insurers will often ask the question if all windows at ground floor level have window locks - so this is their preferred minimum. I'd suggest that if you at least ensure the ground floor ones all have locks, then you can use that as a "selling point" to potential tenants - and some might reduce your voids by choosing your flat over another.

One of the big issues with being a tenant is the security/lack of care by the landlord.

Thanks for the speedy reply. It's upstairs only that some windows don't have locks and we are loathe to start messing about with them in case it causes us more problems.

They are more than likely designated means of escape window. They probably also have different hinges that open the window fully. You don't want to be trying to find a tiny key at 3 in the morning when there is a fire downstairs
