Bank Mistake

Wow won't do business with them.0

I've never worked for a clearer but I have seen plenty of cheques post-processing. My understanding is that they're coded once and that's the amount that will be debited/credited for all entries.
It's been a few years since I last took any notice of a cheque so I'm presuming that nothing's changed but the amount is printed on the bottom of the front of the cheque. My assumption is that this amount is machine-read from there on in. This is the reason that you're not supposed to write below the line. Once an error is made it's unlikely to be spotted until the payer's account is debited.0 -

yes but might be why they're faffing if they think some kind of fraud
Unless the OP has a history of fraud (which I very much doubt) then it's unlikely. If the payee has a history then the OP should be recompensed. I also cannot see any bank admitting liability unless they're to blame.0 -

I mean that the call handlers might be going off on tangents that prevent them getting to the point of refunding the OP
In writing will probably be best0 -
Just playing Devil's Advocate... but was this plumbing work for your business or home?
You did mention that it was from your business bank account, and I am wondering why this is relevant.0 -
MrsW, perhaps if you could have got the BBC's Money Box program involved, your problem might have been sorted out quickly. They tend to have that effect on banks when they do this type of thing.
As others have said going through the banks formal complaints procedure and asking for compensation seems the right way to go.0
