ATOL protection

Wanting some advice on what is included in ATOL protection, apologies if this seems like a silly question but can't seem to fully understand the rules.
We have booked a flight+hotel through Expedia before and it's been ATOL protected. We booked it through their flight+hotel option.
We are looking to book through expedia again, and you can book flights and hotel as separate items on the website. If we do that, and not as a flight+hotel booking it's actually cheaper. Would this still have ATOL protection?
I don't understand why it's cheaper anyway as expedia always say they are cheaper together but looking at them as 2 different components on the expedia site is cheaper than as 1 holiday so don't understand why they don't just offer it as that.

If you book flight and hotel separately with Expedia, you will get Flight Plus ATOL protection as long as the 2 components were booked within 1 day of each other. I assume you'd have to add the second item to the same booking as the first for them to pick it up automatically, but not sure of the detail on that.
If you book the items more than a day apart, you are not entitled to ATOL protection on the booking.0 -
I had read that about booking the 2 components on consecutive days. But we would actually be booking the flight and hotel at the same time on Expedia, just not under the "flight+hotel" option on their site, but searching for a flight, then searching for a hotel separately.0

That's fine, you don't have to book using any particular option or combine the bookings, booking the same destination and dates will trigger the ATOL protection. I only discovered that Expedia provided ATOL protection by accidentally making flight+ eligible bookings
The second booking must be made by the end of the following day.0
