Identity fraud leads to CCJ and other issues

I thought Id share this one with you and see what advice you all might have.
About a year ago my wife and I were trying to get a mortgage for a house. On performing an online credit check, the broker found a CCJ in my wife's name from two years ago.
After looking in to it, it was a debt for veterinary services from our old address in London. After looking into it further however, we realised the debt was from over a year after we moved away, and was for treatment on a dog - we've never owned a dog.
Following a conversation with the vet, it seems the couple who rented our house after us used some of our mail that missed redirection as ID, then did a runner.
The management company of the vet told us that they would sort it out for us (write a covering letter explaining the situation, and pay the £100+ cost of getting it set aside) if we just sent them the relevant court forms all filled out. I then followed it up a few weeks later and they said they'd sent everything off. This was about 6 months ago.
I called the court today and discovered that they've not received a thing. No letter, no form, nothing except our initial phone call regarding the CCJ.
What I'd like to know is what recourse we have here.
We missed out on buying the house thanks to this situation, which was largely due to the vets being too stupid to ask for proper ID before letting a customer leave.

Hi
You can still apply to the court to set aside the CCJ yourselves, presumably the vets wouldn’t contest it. Unfortunately the cost has now increased to £255.
You may be able to counterclaim for the inconvenience and expenses but you’ll need to take legal advice to clarify your options there.

You need to place the vets on legal notice that they have failed to act upon a request to remove a CCJ they falsely applied to your name and you shall be filing a substantial claim for damages at the high court in the next 21 days.I do Contracts, all day every day.0
