what does loop condition detected mean

I've contacted my isp to tell them that my phone line is dead but I'm still getting broadband but it keeps dropping now and again and they said that a loop condition has been detected so I need to get an engineer out. I've read it could be the internal wiring but does anyone know what loop condition detected actually means.

I think it basically means that the system is detecting a short circuit somewhere.
Have you tried unplugging everything apart from the phone and seeing if it works in the master socket on its own?

AFAIK, 'loop fault' means a short circuit in the phone line, possibly intermittent as the broadband still works.

Did you try disconnecting the faceplate and connecting the phone directly to the socket? This may help with localising the fault: inside the house or in the incoming line.
  • I tested the phone in the test socket and the phone was still dead. I've had someone out to fit a aerial and they drilled a hole through the wall not to far from the master socket so I'm hoping a lead hasn't come loose.

A loop condition does not mean a short circuit, usually it means an open circuit i.e. no continuous loop to the exchange.

    • LOOP - Line has short circuit caused by the 2 wires touching somewhere.
Many other places say basically the same.

Short circuit your line and see if you still get broadband.

Telephony will not work with an open circuit line but broadband will due to the much higher frequencies.
