We call Australia using our house phone which is an additional monthly cost but someone has told me using WhatsApp is free to call to Australia. Is this true and is it landlines and mobiles abroad? Thanks

Yes it is free, we have apps on our iPhones and iPads and call our daughter in Doha regularly. You do need Internet connection as well. Hope that helps Radders0

There are any number of VoIP or peer to peer voice applications which offer free calls between users who have the application and a data connection.
Some VoIP and similar use is blocked in certain countries, such as in the Middle East, and as data on some mobile networks, but that wouldn't affect Australia on a home network and probably not on mobile either.
On top of that, some VoIP providers have very cheap rates for calls direct to phone numbers, which would be useful if the person you want to call is out of the house and you call direct to their mobile number.0 -

WhatsApp can be used to call any other smartphone that has WhatsApp installed on it, as long as both smartphones have a good enough data connection. The data connection can either be Wi-fi - e.g. at home, in a coffee shop, at a hotel etc - or a mobile data connection. If the data connection isn't up to scratch enough then the call will either be bad quality or just won't work.
If you and your daughter both have decent home broadband connections, then calls made when you are both at home and within range of your respective home Wi-fi hubs should definitely work well. It might also work ok if you and/or your daughter are out and about with a good 3G or 4G mobile connection.
WhatsApp cannot be used to call landlines or to make conventional calls to mobiles.
In a sense, using WhatsApp for voice calls is very similar to using Skype (though with Skype you have the option of paying money in order to make conventional non-Skype calls to landlines and mobiles, which is something WhatsApp does not offer).0 -

Viber is another app very similar to whatsapp, as long as both people have it installed on their phone and have wifi or 3/4g.0

The good thing about Whatsapp is that I can make calls with just 2G and I don't have to use 3G/4G or Wi-Fi and doesn't use so much data like Skype. What happens if you push this button?0
