Tax credit

Hi,

If an overpayment of tax credit has happened even after providing the correct information. Can the HMRC just reduce current award for their mistake? Can see how this gets people in a pickle. Somebody I know is getting reduced £70 a month .

hello, i think they work it out based on income and bands but i am not sure.

you can request to pay it over a greater duration though, and one would imagine, as it was their fault, that you would be very much able to do so (as not your mistake), but again i dunno about dwp policy etc.

Call HMRC if you’re finding it hard to repay - you may get more time. You’ll need your tax credit reference number.
    from here:

also you can dispute, but there is a 3 month time-frame to do so:

    regards

Does the claimant not get a statement showing the information that HMRC have used to arrive at the amount ? If they do, then I think it will be their responsibility to check that the correct information has been used and flag up if it has not...

They do which is why many disputes fail. HMRC consider the responsibilities of both sides in a dispute.

Human error happens so HMRC send awards notices for people to check their personal circumstances. They then have 30 days to report any errors.
