Hi all,

Just wanted to say that my SSE electricity smart meter appears to be functioning on my new British Gas account.

I really hope it is because it's a pain to try and read given where my meter is.

It popped up when I tried to submit my readings and the app had switched to say smart meter - readings not required and the latest meter reading was received today.

Just thought I'd let folk know.

Not necessarily. Suppliers can offer smart meter reading services to other suppliers.

How odd. I was under the impression there was no interoperability and once the supply was changed, SSE would make the meter 'dumb'

SSE do use the same kind of meter, so its not totally out of the question. Is the DCC in your area live? It could well be that.

to know if your smart meter is working, the monitor should declare a tariff rate and should show cost information.

Well it is clearly NOT impossible as my account has up-to-date meter readings and I haven't submitted them and no meter reader has visited my house.

Your response just makes out like I'm making stuff up. As you would know if you had followed the hassle I've had switching to British Gas you would know this is the last thing that would be made up.

What proof would you like to see?

I too was under this impression. When I switched from SSE to OVO I lost the smart functionality. The home display still worked for usage but didn't show accurate costs etc.

When I first switched to British Gas they told me it would remain "dumb". However I now actually have no ability to submit a manual reading and the readings received electronically are correct.

    Hi Meter Man,

Sorry you've got me lost - What's the DCC and how would I know if it was in the area I lived and how would this make a difference?

I'm not at home until later on tonight but I will plug back in the digital display and see if it's showing the correct costs.

What was supposed to happen in may, was a centralised building which all meters regardless of supplier, communicates with, the DCC then forwards on the readings to the supplier.

Ok so got home and plugged in my in house display.

Initially it stated "Illegal supplier change" and all the displays were blank which it didn't when I switched to Ovo. So the meter is definitely connected to a network.

After that it reset itself and all the displays returned.

However it still shows the unit cost as £0.12 which was my SSE tariff rather than the British Gas rate which (rounded) is £0.09

There appear so on be no way to manually change the unit price.

I confirmed the meter reading BG has matches the meter which it does.

Out of interest, exactly how many readings do BG have?

It should be at least 2, the opening reading and the newer updated one.
