HDD activity light

Just treated myself to a new laptop, but it comes without a light to show HDD activity. It's annoying when you're used to one! There are some free downloads available to install a little icon thing to show when the hard drive is active, but they seem to be getting mixed reviews. Has anyone installed one of these downloads? Any recommendations or problems?
Thanks.

In old DOS days the light was useful but Windows thrashes the hard disk all the time so the light is just an irrelevant nuisance. A computer is better off without it.

what tosh..... it may thrash the hdd a lot of the time, but I'd say if you let it do that, you've got it set up wrong....

On one test/trial lappy.... even with 10, you can cut down on the disk-thrashing if tweaked ;):):D

Remember when Vista first came out?? Now THAT was disk-thrashing in the extreme :rotfl:

If the programs on the machine don't handle a failure to access the HDD when required, then an HDD light won't save you.

It's a redundancy, in other words

I'd agree with Gunny. I have Win10 and my hdd light is normally off with the occasional blink.

    sorry, don't agree...

the hdd activity light can often be the first & only indication the machine is struggling to do stuff - that stuff may be legit, it may not be, but if you see the hdd activity you can then investigate :)

Oh well, looks like no-one's bothered to download one of these programs. I'll live without a light for a bit longer and see how things progress - doubtless I'll get used to not knowing when the HD is crunching away and stop worrying about it ...
    Thanks all.
