over payment I did not Clame

I split from my wife 8yrs ago and never claimed tax credit as we both worked full time.
I have never been in contact with my x wife since the split,
I have been sent a bill for over payment of tax credits, can anyone help.
how can I owe if iv never claimed

    Were you claiming childtax credit when you were together? You could both be working full time and still claim that?
