You can hold up their sale and really screw them over. that's what I would do. until they agree to have the loft demised to your lease only. take advantage of the situation.0

The structural points should have been overseen by the building inspector when they did the work so all being well it should be structurally sound (not cause any problems to you) and signed off accordingly. If it isn't then that'll be another headache for them when they sell.0

Of course in fact you DID give them permission to do the work. In your mind it was only conditional upon them allowing your work as well, but you didn't get any of it in writing - so they would be able to tick the box on the form which says they got permission for the work, but just that they cannot supply a copy of this.0

My neighbour did the work himself and never called a building inspector, when I asked him to do so, he replied that as a good will gesture he would allow a surveyor to inspect if I wished - and if I paid for it of course. So I never appointed a surveyor, and the works were never inspected. Will see what happens! Thanks everyone for your comments, really helpful!0
