I must admit cloud dog that that was the first thread that sent my attention to it.
Now my portfolio is set up really defensively, with good performing gold mines, gambling companies, oil companies with a bit of the solid yellow stuff too being the order of the day. Property, highly geared complex companies, retail and esp credit being the toxic waste that is to be avoided right now, all sold off(well apart from my house but thats to live in).

Gold is actually one of the most useless things in the world it produces no income is unsafe to store and does not actually do anything as regards income and capital gain is concerned.
I would hazard a guess at the demand coming from what I would call emmerging markets rather than advanced ones.
As places like china and india have an increasing "New rich prolitariat" these people want to flaunt their wealth a bit.
