To be honest you'd be running a heck of a risk with the CBSA officer. They want to see a 2 year policy from your date of entry to the end of your IEC. There's been a whole lot of people who have had their IEC's cut down and even cancelled as the Provinces are getting fed up of paying medical bills for temporary residents and they're putting pressure on CIC to sort things out.
I would get an e-mail from the insurance company when they tell you stuff on the phone which is contrary to their ts&cs, as in the event of a big claim they'll dump you so fast if they can, and without an e-mail (and sometimes even with one) the FoS will throw a case out.
Maybe I'm not explaining myself very well. It doesn't contradict their t&c's. The 21 day return limit only activates once you enter the country, as the 2 year insurance policy would start the day I arrive home (the same day my 1 week insurance would end) then that limit wouldn't be applicable until I entered Canada again. It would be the same as getting insurance that starts today and not entering Canada for 3 months for example.
I checked True Traveller and it's £140 more, but to be honest it sounds worth it to avoid the hassle.0 -
Are you really going there for just one week for work ?
Or is the first week a holiday and the second stay months later work?
In which case is the visa long dated enough you just start it on your second visit?0 -
I am going for 1 week for a holiday and to check out Toronto a bit to see if I'd want to return there or to somewhere else in Canada, not for work. The visa I have lasts for two years but needs to be 'activated' before June or it expires (you have 1 year to enter Canada after it has been issued). If I don't have insurance for the entire two years when I first enter, they won't issue me with the visa for the 2 years, it will be just for the time I have valid insurance.
I'm going to go for the True Traveller insurance now though so returning home shouldn't be an issue0 -
Brodel,
What was the outcome from this?
I am in the exact same situation. Going to Canada for a weekend to activate my visa then returning to UK then going back to Canada next August to move permanently.
What did you do for insurance?0 -

Fortunately I subscribed to this thread
Weirdly enough I was also looking at my insurance policy today. I ended up getting my insurance through TrueTraveller. It cost £458 for 2 years. That's excluding any baggage insurance.
The frustrating part was that when I went through and received my visa, they didn't even ask about insurance. Better to be safe than sorry though I guess.0 -
Thank you very much for the quick reply! Yeah I've been looking at a few companies TrueTraveller being one. Might just go for them
Many Thanks!0 -
Cjwm1989,
What did you end up going for? I am in the same situation, as in I am going to Canada for two weeks at the end of this year then hoping to return next year to start working.
The difference is however, due to recent complications with my job I may not be able to return at all. I don't want to buy two years insurance that activates when I fly over for my first two weeks and then be unable to cancel it because I've already travelled on it.
Did anyone have luck with buying a two week policy for their first trip and a second one that starts immediately after and successfully getting their visa for two years? My thinking is, that because I won't have travelled on the second policy, I should be able to cancel if I end up not being able to travel.
Thank you in advance0
